THE GOOD ROAD
The commissioner is sitting at the desk and examining the documentation presented by a young man sitting in front of him.
After putting down the papers, he turns to the young man:
"Young man, I see that you have an excellent CV and you have just graduated in law with 110 cum laude, why do you want to join the police instead of pursuing a legal career?".
«Commissioner, it's a bit of a long story, if you have time I can tell it to you» replies the young man.
"Tell me about it, it will certainly make me understand if your choice is truly thoughtful."
The young man begins to tell the story while the inspector stares at him with interest.
I am the son of a policeman who was killed in the line of duty when I was still little; at that time I had not yet reached the age of two but I still have before my eyes the last day I saw my father; like every morning, before going out, he held me in his arms and kissed me, then he placed me in my bed, at that moment a ray of light was reflected on his badge which seemed to shine like a star, that was his last kiss. I grew up with my mother amidst a thousand difficulties and I paid for my studies by working and obtaining scholarships. A few days ago I saw my mother delicately putting away an old jacket, I asked her what it was, she replied that it was the jacket my father wore the day he was killed; I took that jacket and laid it delicately on the bed, I saw the insignia and ranks but there wasn't that golden badge that I remembered from when I was a child, but the jacket seemed to have been torn; I asked my mother why it wasn't there, she replied that when they handed it over to her they said that when they rescued my father the jacket was torn, they didn't know why. I remembered having seen the notice for enlistment in the Police somewhere and I decided that this would be my career to honor that father who I never got to know well.
